"Quick view" dashboard

  <Abstract>
This dashboard has been developed to inform residents, students and other interested users about the status of groundwater in Cape Town. The dashboard is part of a bigger project by the Table Mountain Water Source Partnership and its planning and development was funded by ABInBev and the Danish Embassy through WWF South Africa. If you need help you can visit the How to navigate page.

Background

South Africa’s water source areas produce disproportionately greater volumes of water in relation to their size. Only 10% of our land provides us with 50% of our surface run-off (water in wetlands, streams and rivers). One of these strategic water source areas is the Table Mountain Water Source Area (TMWSA) in the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality. This is an easily understandable dashboard to present groundwater information of the TMWSA on a map, which is derived from an up-to-date groundwater database set up and maintained from various sources of data.

For more information on the South African water source areas visit this webpage.

Water source areas in Cape Town

South Africa has 22 water source areas (WSA) spread across five provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Limpopo). The total size of our water source areas is 12.32 million hectares. A number of these areas extend and are shared with Lesotho and Swaziland; approximately 1.91 million hectares in Lesotho and 0.93 million hectares in Swaziland.

The water source areas around Cape Town in the Western Cape are the Table Mountain Water Source area in the west, the Table Mountain and Peninsula WSA in the centre and the Peninsula and Cape Flats WSA on the eastern side of the Cape Town metropolitan area. These are identified by secondary quaternary catchments, which were created by evaluating a digital elevation model, and which may not coincide 100% with the "official" quaternary catchment boundaries.

For more information on the Table Mountain Water Source area please also visit this <a href="https://www.wwf.org.za/our_work/initiatives/water_source_areas/" target="_blank">webpage</a> and this <a href="https://water.cer.org.za/areas/table-mountain" target="_blank">webpage</a>.

These are the boreholes/wells specifically selected for the groundwater monitoring in the Table Mountain Water Source are. They should be representative for monitoring the groundwater conditions in the area in which they are.
A borehole is a constructed hole in the ground from which groundwater can be abstracted, recharged or observed. A well or wellpoint is similar to a borehole, but normally larger in diameter and often only a few metres deep. They are used for the extraction of shallow groundwater, sometimes located in rivers/streams extracting the shallow groundwater from the river bed.

DWS monitoring boreholes

Groundwater level monitoring boreholes belonging to the HYDSTRA monitoring network of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). Currently only some monitoring stations have "real-time" monitoring data available, but a longer term record can be viewed by going to the NIWIS website, where one can zoom to the relevant station manually.

All the Department’s monitoring data is firstly uploaded and acts as DWS main database. This includes logger data, hand measurements and real-time monitoring data. From HYDSTRA groundwater data is then exported to the National Groundwater Archive and NIWIS or for any other use. The NGA, for example, receives only one measurement value for a geosite per day although all the 12 min. Readings are available on HYDSTRA.

At a few selected sites daily rainfall is recorded, but in this database stored as monthly rainfall. The histogram charts represent monthly averages [mm] in different colours, starting with January on the left through to December. The height of the histogram is determined by the total annual rainfall compared to the other stations.

Not all stations have long-term records (from the 1950s), mostly derived from the DWS, some only from 2000 (SYNOP/BUFR data from Meteomanz) or the middel of 2018 (generally from the SAWS). All stations' rainfall records are updated on a regular basis, thus improving the statistics.

The Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data (BUFR) is a binary data format maintained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). SYNOP (surface synoptic observations) is a numerical code (called FM-12 by WMO) used for reporting weather observations made by manned and automated weather stations. Most South African weather stations are part of the WMO network.

Average Electrical Conductivity [mS/m]

Electrical conductivity (EC) expressed in milli-Siemens per metre is a measure of how well a material accommodates the transport of electric charge. The more salts dissolved in the water, the higher the EC value. It is used to estimate the amount of total dissolved salts, or the total amount of dissolved ions in the water.

The SANS 241: 2015 limit for health risk concentration is 170 mS/m. The standard defines health risks (parameters falling outside these limits may cause acute or chronic health problems in individuals), aesthetic risks (parameters falling outside these limits indicate that water is visually, aromatically or palatably unacceptable and operational risks (parameters falling outside these limits may indicate that
operational procedures to ensure water quality standards are met may have failed).

The SA Domestic Water Quality Guide specifies the following limits (classes):

Class 1: 70 - 150
Class 2: 150 - 370

What did the boreholes yield during drilling [l/s]?

Borehole yield definition:
The amount of water obtained from a borehole, aquifer or water resource within a specified time.
The volume of water per unit of time blown from the borehole during drilling.

The blow yield is the rate at which water is blown from a borehole during drilling. A blow yield test is usually conducted once the borehole is completed to provide an indication of borehole yield. This "theoretical" yield may or may not be a sustainable pumping rate for longer periods of time, which needs to be determined with a range op pumping (aquifer) tests.

The borehole prospects, or chances of a successful borehole (BH), is a measure of the ease or difficulty with which groundwater will be struck during drilling of a borehole. This is a statistical analysis of historical boreholes drilled in an area. A successful borehole is defined as a borehole with a yield of at least 0.1l/s (may just be enough for garden watering), while a borehole with > 2l/s is regarded as a "strong" borehole.

This is a subset of the Official Watercource layer of the City of Cape Town. Open Watercourse river reaches are comprised of feature types such as Natural Rivers, Streams, Channels, Canals, Overland Flow Paths/Gap Connectors and Stream Extensions. The spatial coverage of Open Watercourses of the greater Cape Town Drainage Catchment area includes all rivers within the catchments, which drain into but also extend outside the Cape Town metro area.
